SITES PROPHECIZING DOOM
Cults, seers and New Age End-of-Worlders
-
GALACTIC RESEARCH INSTITUTE - With references to obscure mathematical formulae and ancient Mayan dieties, this New Age site predicts doomsday to occur on December 21, 2012, coinciding with the end of the Mayan Long Count Calendar. My take on Jose Arguelles and his cohorts can be found here.
-
THE HOUSE OF YAHWEH - Buffalo Bill Hawkins founded this church with his brother after a trip to Israel. He's made a few prophecies for the end of the world, but has given no specific date lately. Maybe he's too busy fighting the charges against him for molesting children. You can see my take on The House of Yahweh here.
-
THE LORD OUR RIGHTEOUSNESS CHURCH - William Bent, founder of this Australian church, claims that he will be the next Pope. He obviously knows how to be a Priest, as he's currently fighting a conviction for child molestation. You can see my take on Little Pebble here.
REFERENCE WORK ON DOOMSDAY PROPHECIES
Scholarly research and theory on the doomsday phenomenon.
-
WHEN PROPHECY FAILS - This is a free online edition of the book published in the mid '50s that explores a UFO doomsday cult, and how its members dealt with the cognitive dissonance they experienced when doomsday didn't occur on the date predicted.
-
SKEPSIS - Although the site is situated in the Netherlands, this web page lists many scholarly articles written in english. Sociologists, preferring precision over the bubba-ized butchering of our language, group "cults" within the NRM (New Religious Movements) category.
